The Metzger family hosted Mirja from Montenegro
We came up with the idea of becoming a host family through friends. We have the space, we are curious about other people and enjoy learning more about other countries. It was an adjustment at first. You're no longer on your own and you have a new person in your family who you have to get to know and who has their own routines. But we settled in quickly. After two or three months, Mirja flipped a linguistic switch and then almost everything was in German.
We learned a lot of exciting things about Montenegro, because Mirja had a lot to tell about her country. Mirja also shared very personal things and that was just a great experience. Mirja is a very communicative, empathetic and likeable person. She dared to tell us when she didn't like something, and we were allowed to do the same with her. That was very important to us, because it's normal to have different opinions when you live together for a whole year. We were very lucky that Mirja also likes to play board games like us and we had so many fun situations during the Activity pantomime.
We went skiing together and to the Christmas market, but it's the little moments that make the experience of hosting so special. That feeling that Mirja is an additional family member, that we enjoy her company and we're happy when she comes home. Mirja has become like a sister to our daughter Leonie. They talked about everything, went shopping together, went to restaurants and lay in bed in the evening with stomach aches because they laughed so hard.
Our friends also got on well with Mirja. They saw how wonderful and enriching it is to be a host family. This has made some of them curious about cultural exchange. Hopefully we have inspired a few people to host students. We can definitely imagine repeating this experience!
But first we would like to visit Mirja and get to know Montenegro.
